Server Backups are a LifeSaver

Today my partner, at TechPad Agency, ( Dan White ) discovered that our server was hacked over the weekend. A group of hackers had placed some files in multiple locations on our CPanel server and somehow gained access to WHM.

After a day of Dan’s fighting with the mass emailing problems, password changes and stress of a server being compromised, there was little hope, the hackers could have hidden hundreds of trojans and gained backdoor access. So our boys over at Layered Tech (formerly FastServers.Net) were busy trying to hunt down all the offending files.

The damage done by the hackers was all too apparent, relaying mass emails in our servers name. Thankfully my partner noticed that the only real harm done so far was that the files that the hackers had place were being labled as malicious, not the whole domain. *Bullet Dodged*

Like a ray of hope we all of a sudden realized we had managed backup service with Layered Tech. After browsing through the backups we were able to locate a clean copy of the entire file structure of the server.

The story continues..

If you are setting up a server and have the option of buying a remote backup service, do it. The investment can be realized when the unthinkable happens. Think of it like car insurance or more appropriately a life preserver. You will be happy you have it when you desperately need it.

What about you? Do you have managed backups on your website?

  • Managed backups are definitely a must (weekly at least, daily if possible). For best measures, I recommend 3 copies of everything. #1 is the site (and database), the host's managed full backup is #2, and a local onsite backup is #3. Why # 3? I have had, on occassion, corrupt backup files from the host which would simply not restore (ouch). Hey, its always wise to expect the unexpected, # 3 saved my behind.

Just be careful in case what you restore brings back the vunerability that led to the hacking. You should quickly patch the weakness, lest the bad guys come knockin again.
